Plot

After attaining his drivers licence on his 16th birthday, naive-teenager Vert Wheeler discovers the Deora II Hot Wheels car. The door on the front of the car opens, and a monitor shows a recording of a mysterious man named Dr. Peter Tezla, inviting him to a competition called the World Race: a contest between seasoned professionals and talented drivers. Driving to a secret location in the Californian desert, the drivers are informed of the race along an interdimensional racetrack called 'Highway 35″, created by extraterrestrial beings called Accelerons. At the end of the race is the Wheel of Power. Tezla himself tried to retrieve it himself remotely with little success. His plan is to use the drivers, with their unique driving abilities, to retrieve the wheel on his behalf. To enter the Highway, each driver must be doing 300 mph (with the help of an enhanced Nitrous system called Nitrox2) at specific points around the world. During the start, Vert immediately starts a rivalry with Taro Kitano, leader of the Scorchers team; and Lani Tam, a driver of another Wave Rippers car like Vert’s. It was released on VHS and DVD on December 2, 2003,[2] and was followed by Hot Wheels: AcceleRacers (2005).

Plot[edit]

Having failed multiple times in driving through Highway 35, a track built in another dimension by supernatural beings known as Accelerons, Dr. Peter Tezla and his robot assistant GIG host the prestigious World Race, inviting professional drivers from all over the globe to retrieve the Wheel of Power for a reward of $5 million to the winning driver and their team. This includes Josef 'Vert' Wheeler—a 16-year-old student from California who recently passed with a perfect score on his driving test—along with Kurt Wylde, Taro Kitano, Banjee Castillo, Brian 'Zone' Kadeem, and Lani Tam. With the exception of Lani, these drivers would become leaders of their racing teams that use specially designed cars for certain scenarios. Vert's Wave Rippers use jets that allow their vehicles to hover in the air; Kurt's Street Breeds can navigate through complicated and difficult paths; Taro's Scorchers use armoured plows that allow them to drive through lava; Banjee's Road Beasts can cut and clear debris; and Kadeem's Dune Rats can drive offroad. Each car is equipped with Nitrox2, allowing them to reach 300 mph and access Highway 35.

In the race, Vert is able to stay ahead of the others with his unique skateboarding-based driving style. However, an unknown driver known as Z36 appears and detonates part of the track, causing a volcano to erupt and lava flow onto the road. Vert, Taro, Banjee, and Kadeem manage to narrowly avoid this, but Lani's car sinks into the lava and is trapped, forcing Taro and Vert to go back and rescue her. Kurt wins, initially unaware that it was only the first leg of the World Race. Afterwards, more drivers enter the World Race and are looking for their teams. Markie, Kurt's estranged younger brother, was invited by Vert to join his team after being declined to join his brother's team.

In the second leg of the World Race, Banjee leads his team to an alternate route of the track as Vert, Lani, and Markie follow them. Z36 reappears and blows up a bridge, with Vert barely surviving as it collapses. The route leads them to a ramp through a giant spinning wheel. With Lani's calculations, the drivers must reach a certain speed to clear the wheel and land the jump, but Markie was not fast enough and his car is hit, accidentally blowing up a Nitrox2 canister and sending the wheel spinning quickly out of control. Vert and his team drive through the wheel despite Lani being unable to help any longer, just before the entire wheel is destroyed. They would be the last drivers to finish the race, with Markie blaming Banjee. Meanwhile, Taro and Kadeem tie for first place after narrowly avoiding a pile-up. Hack ninja school online.

That night, Z36 contacts his boss Gelorum, who reminds him of his mission to prevent anyone from reaching the Wheel of Power by 'eliminating' them. Meanwhile, Kadeem is meditating alone when he meets the blind spirit Haziz, reminds him that his home in the Sahara is running out of clean water. Kadeem is determined to win the World Race and claim the prize money for his people, but Haziz warns him of an unknown 'great danger' lying ahead.

In the third leg, the drivers find themselves in the middle of a challenging desert, landing in thick sand that has them stuck. Most of the drivers are able to escape with their cars' abilities. Later in the race, Kadeem discovers the Wheel of Power at the top of a pyramid and ties it to his car. Z36 attempts to assassinate Kadeem using his car's cannon that sends him flying off the pyramid, but he quickly recovers and escapes, resulting in a pursuit. Z36 knocks the Wheel off of Kadeem's car and it rolls on the track. After a brief struggle with Z36, Kadeem subdues Z36—now revealed to be Kurt Wylde—and retrieves the Wheel. Before finishing the race, the Wheel of Power disintegrates, being a fake the whole time. This was the 'great danger' Haziz betold. Vert comforts the disappointed Kadeem as Kurt attempts to leave, only to be stopped by Gelorum, who still finds him useful despite his cover being blown.

In the fourth and final leg of the race, with the assistance of robot drivers, Kurt starts the race with the lights still red, forcing other drivers to pursue him. Kurt's robots place various obstacles on the road that distract other drivers. A rocky overpass is detonated, forming a roadblock. While the others stay to clear the roadblock, Markie jumps over it and continues alone. As the robots place landmines over a large bridge against Kurt's orders, Kurt tries to warn Markie of the incoming danger, but is ignored. The mines detonate and Markie is knocked out as his car hangs over a cliff. Kurt goes back to rescue Markie, but he is attacked by a robot who threatens to destroy him. Markie, awakened, knocks the robot down the cliff, saving Kurt. Kurt, however, defeats Markie after he refuses to help him cheat in the race. With the other drivers back, Wheeler and Kurt battle for first place. In an attempt to overpower Vert, Kurt crashes and is out of the competition. Now alone, Vert eventually discovers Hot Wheels City, where the true Wheel of Power lies. The robot that attacked Kurt is revealed to have survived, and despite his pursuit, Vert reaches the Wheel of Power first, winning the World Race and the grand prize.

The drivers, however, are upset when they realise that Highway 35 can no longer be opened with the Wheel of Power taken, and together confront Tezla. Tezla explains that he wanted the Wheel to provide unlimited clean energy for the planet, but the Wheel causes a power surge that destroys GIG. With Gelorum's forces surrounding the complex, Gelorum makes an ultimatum demanding the Wheel of Power's surrender. Tezla and drivers, now determined to bring the Wheel of Power back where it belongs, attack Gelorum's forces and use the Wheel to reopen the portal to Hot Wheels City. Kurt, after realising that Gelorum was a robot in disguise and unwilling to hurt the drivers any longer, had a change of heart and joins Vert in returning the Wheel. After a long battle, the Wheel is returned where it belonged, bringing life to the city once again, forcing Gelorum and the last of her robots to retreat. In a final act of charity, Vert gives away his prize money to Kadeem to bring aid to his people.

Back on Earth, Tezla is able to restore GIG and allows all drivers to keep their cars and Nitrox2, allowing them to return to Highway 35 whenever they want.
