Season 2
Over the Garden Wall

Here we are again, guys. A quick update on my Over the Garden Wall Reaction series. I had originally planned to do two episodes of that a week, over the weekend, while I watched Steven during the weekdays, but that plan’s fallen to the wayside. Since I’m not caught up with Steven, I’m instead going to watch an episode of OtGW sometime in the next couple of days instead of an episode of Steven Universe. There are some people who are looking forward to that series, and I know I want to check it out, so I don’t think it would be fair to ignore it until I’m caught up on Steven Universe. As usual, guys, remember to keep your comments spoiler free and keep the hype low. Let’s get into the episode!

Steven learns a little about wilderness survival.

Written and Storyboarded by Colin Howard and Jeff Liu

  • This looks very much like a giant Wailing Stone. There’s gotta be some relation, right?

  • Also, that Connie outfit is pretty cute.

  • ‘The Great North’, huh? So they’re in Canada?

  • “Now one where it looks like you’re looking for a monster.” That’s a clever way to introduce what this episode is! So, if they’re looking for a monster, that would make this Connie’s first legitimate mission with one of the gems, then, right?

  • “Do one where the joke’s not that funny, but it’s more like a joke that makes you think.”

  • “Her parents asked me to take lots of pictures.” That’s really nice, actually. Connie’s relationship with her parents is starting to open up towards a more honest relationship.

  • This is a pretty big difference from Steven’s first mission. Not that I don’t think that Connie’s more mature than Steven was at that time, but she’s not too much older than him, and it just seems to make more sense to me that your first couple of missions should be simpler stuff. I know that they said that this was a ‘simple gem recovery’, but isn’t that, like, the most dangerous type of mission the gems go on?

  • Why aren’t all of the gems going on this one? Is it because they have a second mission they have to do instead? If it’s an easier mission than this one, why aren’t they sending Steven and Connie to it instead, and if it’s a harder mission, why are they sending Pearl, Connie and Steven to do this mission? If Pearl’s looking out for Connie on her first mission, it’d probably take a lot longer to finish the mission. I dunno, something about this setup just irks me a little. Maybe it’s because I’m horribly biased towards Colin Howard?

  • “How will we know if this corrupted gem is nearby?” sounds of a corrupted gem nearby

  • That’s cool looking. I like the design a lot.

  • And of course Steven takes a picture of it. Wonderful. Here’s hoping he doesn’t lose his phone by the end of this episode.

  • This ought to be pretty interesting. Pearl doesn’t seem like she’s going to really involve herself, so it looks like she just wants to see how Steven and Connie have progressed.

  • So there’s two of them? Why are they so similar in design? I’m quite curious about that.

  • Ah, so Pearl wasn’t expecting two, and this is now apparently enough of a threat that she doesn’t feel comfortable letting Steven and Connie deal with this on their own.

  • It definitely looked like the two monsters were communication there. We’ve seen that Centipeetle’s crew turned into Centipeetle’s, too. Could it be possible that these two gems knew each other before they were corrupted? If proximity has a relationship to what your corrupted form becomes, then it’s possible that these two were related in some way.

  • They also seem to be non-combative here. Either they don’t care about the gang, they’re trying to find something, or they’re trying to hide from something. Considering that we recently saw Centipeetle trying to find her crew, it might be that.

  • “We could split up!” Hm..so, the obvious ending to this would be, they go off chasing one, but then discover whatever it is the monsters are looking for/running from, or that they go chasing one, but end up fighting against both of them. Something along these lines.

  • This writing seems a little stilted. ‘You are my pupil, so I know your fighting skills are excellent, but I’m afraid this is too risky.” Why not just shorten it to ‘Connie, I know your fighting skills are excellent, but I’m afraid this is too risky?” It’s like the writers felt the need to remind us of small things that we already know, and had been reminded of earlier this episode.

  • I love it.The Punishment of Nature. That sounds like a really metal album.

  • I do wish we had context on where Garnet and Amethyst were. Maybe it’s just my enormous hate boner for Colin Howard, but this episode feels like it would be a lot better if it had a slightly stronger foundation.

  • Oh my god, she’s trying to show off. I love it.

  • “Yeah..these are fresh.”

  • “When civilization collapses and this world ends, I need to be ready to build the new one.” Do you gotta be a downer, Connie? Why not try preventing the collapse of civilization for a change, huh?

  • “How do we handle Terminal Decline without alternate energy?” Well, alternative energy is quickly becoming cheaper than fossil fuels, so once we figure out a way to deal with the oil moguls of a dying industry in about 30 years, we should be okay.

  • I don’t know why, but Pearl feels like an instructional voice-over in a video game. Maybe it’s because she’s an instructional voice-over in a cartoon.

  • Yeah, Protes! Hell yeah!

  • Wait a second, I just realized. Hasn’t Connie gone on a mission before, technically? She went with them in Ocean Gem!

  • Oh, has Connie never been told what corrupted gems are? I mean, I guess this is an okay place for exposition, but we already know all this stuff, and we had a primer during Monster Reunion, so what’s the point of this in the narrative?

  • She can snowboard? That is a rad, albeit very specific, skill.

  • “We can definitely take care of this ourselves.” Mhm…

  • “And remember, Connie…” “Stance wide, body lowered. I’ve got it, man.” ”Balance is the key!” You know, I really don’t like this line. It’s an unnecessary callback to something that feels totally out of place.

  • Oh, dear. This does not look like a good situation. Looks like a fight between one of the monsters and something humanoid. Considering that we’ve recently reintroduced Jasper to the world, it seems possible that we might be seeing her today, or it might be something totally unrelated.

  • “We should probably take shelter from this blizzard.” Mhm, ‘blizzard’.

  • “We can brew a vitamin-c rich tea with them so we don’t get scurvy!” Connie, it’s been, like, an hour. I know you want to impress your soon-to-be husbando, but you don’t have to eat pine needles to do it.

  • I see your plan, Maheswaran. You just want to sidle up with your boyfriend.

  • I knew it! She’s putting on the moves with my son!

  • Oh, I see. So the gem’s morphing back and forth between humanoid and monster? That’s really interesting.

  • “It might not be as corrupted as we think!” So, there are levels of corruption, then? This might be interesting, then. I wonder if Steven would be able to heal a less corrupted gem to a greater degree.

  • Speaking of corruption, in Monster Reunion, Centipeetle had her original mind, right? Is that a result of Steven’s healing? I hadn’t considered this before, but if Steven could help bring gems back, at least in their own mind, that would be kind of incredible for them.

  • “I can’t heal gems that are corrupted, at least not all the way, but if it’s half-corrupted…”

  • I like this gem’s hair a lot. It reminds me of Amethyst’s.

  • “What if it’s running..from itself?” ? That’s not even good pseudo-intellectual bullshit. I expect at least three levels of irony when I see this kind of stuff, Steven. Come back with some better beans next time.

  • Oh no, not the radio! It’s definitely not like they could whisper, ‘we can’t talk, monster here’ into the radio right now.

  • Steven, it’s already aware of you at this point. Just tell Pearl what’s happening.

  • “I’m just going to keep talking until somebody answers.” Like..you’re a better-written character than this, Pearl. Who did this to you?

  • “Hey..how’s it going?”

  • Quick note, a closed fist is a much better gesture than an open hand when dealing with a scared animal.

  • Grr! Monster smash!

  • “Connie, what are you doing?” “I.I don’t know. I wasn’t prepared for this.” See, this is why you should have started with a smaller mission!

  • Oh, I see. The survival guide was an analogue for her training to deal with gems. She knows everything that she’s supposed to, technically, but she doesn’t have any of the experience she needs to know when and how to use it.

  • “That was just a joke!..Don’t tell Garnet.”

  • Oh. I, uh..Fuck. You got me, Steven Universe.

  • Jasper be tol. Ye ye ye. She so strong. Ye ye ye.

  • Ew, Jasper just ripped its gem out of its body.

  • Damn, she got the Boulder Badge and the Cascade Badge already? And she’s probably gonna do well against Surge, too.

  • “You weren’t supposed to fight. You were supposed to call me, and you did. This was a total success.” I dunno, Pearl, it seemed like you had planned on having them fight earlier without intervening. I don’t know if I buy this.

  • “Are your parents going to see this?” “My parents see all of my photos, ma’am.”

  • Nice ending! No star whipe, then.

Closing Thoughts-

This was an alright episode. Some of the dialogue felt a little stilted, and the setup was a little weak, but it was fun to see Jasper here. Something about Connie’s character felt particularly stale, though, for a good bit of the episode. It was like somebody replaced her randomly with a character made out of all of Connie’s tropes, and she just felt kind of flat. I really liked the monster designs in this episode, and a lot of the art looked really nice, especially the colors, but overall, it just felt kind of weak. My top ten episodes are-

Thanks for reading, guys! As usual, keep your comments spoiler free, and keep the hype to a minimum. Today, I’m gonna recommend that you check out the webcomic How to Love.”Oh, /u/elecathes, why do you always recommend webcomics?” Well, I’m glad you asked, Mr. Strawman. That’s because I do nothing but read webcomics nowadays. (And I am always looking for suggestions.) How to Love is a wonderful serialized webcomic about being comfortable loving yourself and others, and it’s simultaneously one of the funniest and most heartwarming things I’ve read in quite some time. Finally, a question-

  • Have you ever had an experience where you realized that you were out of your depth at something you thought you could handle?
